Star Trek: Prodigy

Lower Decks seasons

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated sequel to Star Treks: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Lower Decks.

Similar to TAS, Prodigy is in-part marketed as being a "kids show," but don't let that fool you. It's a "kids show" in a manner similar to how Avatar: The Last Airbender is a "kids show" — meaning while some aspects of the storytelling and presentation are designed to appeal mainly to kids, a larger amount of the storytelling and presentation is rich, nuanced, and sophisticated enough to appeal equally to adults as well. This show is much more like the other Star Trek shows than it is like SpongeBob SquarePants.

That said, the unusual demographic targeting combined with its animated format does make it something of a mixed bag compared to previous Star Trek series, similar to what happened with Lower Decks. Like Lower Decks, while the quality of the writing is mostly excellent, as is the quality of the animation — unlike TAS in both regards — one can't help but notice the series would've been much better if it were live-action. Even so, the series is excellent, a good citizen of Star Trek's canon unlike Discovery and Strange New Worlds which aired concurrently, and in fact adds much to Star Trek's canon by providing much-needed followup and missing closure for several characters from earlier Star Trek series, particularly Voyager. Indeed, this series feels almost like a direct sequel to Voyager and is a must-watch for any Voyager fan.
