Star Trek: Lower Decks reviews

Lower Decks seasons

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated sequel to Star Treks: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. The first animated series since TOS was continued via its own animated series (TAS), Lower Decks is directly inspired by this TNG episode of the same name which became very popular among Star Trek fans for primarily focusing on lower ranking crew members.

Lower Decks is also notable for being the first primarily comedy-focused Star Trek series, which when combined with its animated format makes it something of a mixed bag compared to previous Star Trek series. The quality of the writing is mostly excellent, as is the quality of the animation — unlike TAS in both regards — but one can't help but notice the series would've been much better if it were live-action and not primarily focused on comedy. Even so, the series is excellent, a good citizen of Star Trek's canon unlike Discovery and Strange New Worlds which aired concurrently, and in fact adds much to Star Trek's canon by providing much-needed followup and missing closure for several characters from TNG, DS9, and Voyager.
